About NBISC

The NB Invasive Alien Species Working Group (forerunner to NBISC) was formed as a result of an Atlantic Environment and Invasive Plants workshop in September 2007 in Truro Nova Scotia. On September 23, 2008, a NB Invasive Plants Workshop was organized by the working group under the leadership of the Connell Memorial Herbarium, Department of Biology, UNB, in Fredericton, New Brunswick.

The workshop was funded by the Canadian Invasive Alien Species Partnership Program and by the NB Department of Natural Resources with support from the University of New Brunswick, NB Department of Agriculture and Aquaculture, Nature Conservancy of Canada and Canadian Food Inspection Agency. Representatives from government and non-government organizations from across New Brunswick participated in the conference. The approximately 65 participants were overwhelmingly in favor of formalizing the existing ad-hoc NB IAS Working Group into a coordinating body for IAS in New Brunswick. Also, the participants agreed to expand the focus from plants, to include all invasive alien species.

Abstracts from the presentations and results from the survey and discussions can be found at NB Invasive Plants Workshop 2008. Please visit the link for more information. http://www.unb.ca/herbarium/2008Workshop/index.html.

Mission Statement

The NB Invasive Species Council is a collaborative initiative involving a number of agencies formed to address the lack of coordination and understanding associated with invasive species within the province of New Brunswick and across Canada. Recognizing that managing invasive species is a shared responsibility among stakeholders.

Our Goals

•Encourage actions to help detect, prevent and manage invasive species
•Bridge mandates and encourage partnerships and dialogue between organizations and stakeholders (stakeholders include: government agencies, NGOs/invasive plant councils, landowners/general public, industry/occupants, research/academia).
•Serve as a respected repository and source of credible information and resources on invasive species in New Brunswick.
•Work toward becoming the lead agency to coordinate and enable shared responsibility of invasive species management in New Brunswick.
•Liaise with other provincial, regional and state Councils to create a multi-jurisdictional network against invasive species.
