Norway Maple - Acer platanoides

  • Commonly planted ornamental, can tolerate less than ideal planting conditions and ahs several color forms
  • Leaves are similar to the native sugar maple (Acer saccharum). They are distinguished a follows:

Norway Maple (Acer platanoides)

  • white latex especial at broken petiole
  • leaves wider than long
  • rounded buds
  • fruit wings almost 180 degrees divergent

Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum)

  • no white latex
  • leaves generally longer than wide
  • pointed buds
  • fruit wings about 120 degrees divergent

The Problem

  • Very shade tolerant and able to penetrate sites wiht an intact canopy
  • Reduces the diversity of the herbaceous layer shading out the spring ephemerals & decreasing establishment of native trees and shrubs

Distribution

  • Found invading native forests near horticultural plantings throughout NB
