Woodland Angelica - Angelica sylvestris

  • A large (1-2.5m) robust plant with dilated leaf sheaths and large, white umbrella like flower heads
  • The upper leaf is more sheath than leaf stems is tubular
  • Both Angelica an Cow Parsnip (Heracleum maximum) are tall plants of moist habitats with dilated sheaths
  • To separate look at the lower leaves, cow parsnip has leaves with 3 large leaflets, only once divded, Angelica has leaves twice divided

The Problem

  • A large plant that can overwhelm other vegetation in moist open or woodland habitats
  • A prolific seed producer

Distribution

  • Has become very common inopen moist habitats both up the river and down the river from Fredericton
  • We appear to be at the epicentre of its naturalization in North America - only found in NB, NS Quebec & Ontario so far. First reports were from Cape Breton and the Fredericton area
