Himalayan Balsam - Impatiens glandulifera

  • Tall (up to 2.5m) glabrous annual with hollow succulent reddish stem
  • Of the 3 species of Impatiens in NB, it is the only one with pink/purple flowers rather than orange
  • Flowers range from white to various shades of pink and purple
  • Exploding seeds can be shot up to 7m away

The Problem

  • Can take over riparian areas changing or stopping water movement
  • As an annual it provides less protection from erosion after it dies back in the fall
  • Prolific producer of nectar may draw pollinators from native plants

Distribution

  • Partially shade tolerant, found in moist or riparian areas
  • In NB found mostly on the Fundy Coast, also starting to spread in Fredericton
  • Distribution is limited in Eastern North America
  • One of the worst 20 invasive plants in the UK and also on the radar in Western North America
