Himalayan Balsam - Impatiens glandulifera
Tall (up to 2.5m) glabrous annual with hollow succulent reddish stem
Of the 3 species of
Impatiens
in NB, it is the only one with pink/purple flowers rather than orange
Flowers range from white to various shades of pink and purple
Exploding seeds can be shot up to 7m away
The Problem
Can take over riparian areas changing or stopping water movement
As an annual it provides less protection from erosion after it dies back in the fall
Prolific producer of nectar may draw pollinators from native plants
Distribution
Partially shade tolerant, found in moist or riparian areas
In NB found mostly on the Fundy Coast, also starting to spread in Fredericton
Distribution is limited in Eastern North America
One of the worst 20 invasive plants in the UK and also on the radar in Western North America
